The Top 10 IT Trends for 2011

I’ve been sifting through the many pages of research from reputable sources regarding the greatest trends in IT for 2011. I’m finding most of them not terribly surprising, though we here at Innotas want to keep our customers and readers abreast of technology’s latest and greatest.

So without further adieu, here is the full list of IT Trends for 2011.

  1. IT used as growth for profit. Many companies are looking forward to increased use of technology or IT processes specifically to increase their organizations’ revenue. While CRM and ERP applications remain popular and will be deployed often, Business Process Intelligence provided from IT will continue to grow.
  2. More investment in Cloud Computing and SaaS. Especially good news for Innotas and our customers. We see a bigger investment in the speed, familiarity and cost savings of software as a service.
  3. Business intelligence will trump Social Media. It’s about time. Now that companies see the value of Social Media, they will turn this massive collection of data into something useful other than FarmVille.
  4. Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure will slow down. This isn’t to say that companies will stop implementing VDIs altogether, but they will focus more on how the technology actually helps companies in 2011.
  5. Infrastructure Virtualization continues to pick up the pace. Now that the major of businesses have embraced the Cloud, getting their servers, storage and applications aligned will be a focus in the New Year.
  6. Beefed up security. This shouldn’t be particularly shocking, considering the many breaches we’ve seen in 2010. A recent survey from Deloitte shows an increase of 10% in 2010 and that will increase in 2011.
  7. Going Mobile. We knew this was going to be a big trend in 2010, but businesses in every industry are finding that going mobile is truly necessary for long-term success in 2011.
  8. Hardware investment and consolidation. Many firms expect significant investment in hardware next year and storage systems look similarly strong in 2011.
  9. End users gain more control. This is good news for all parties involved. End users now have the control to install and run applications on their own, as well as utilize mobile services. Another area of importance is social networking in the workplace. Yammer is an example of this done right.
  10. Unified Communications gets a seat at the Grown-ups table. Many businesses are seeing an increase in productivity because every tool they use is now all in one place.
